ESL Program Specialist Certification - IU1
About the ESL Program Specialist Certification Program
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program Specialist Certification program is a collaborative grant project between California University of Pennsylvania (Cal U) and Intermediate Unit 1 which began in 2013 and will end in 2018. Both organizations work diligently to provide quality training and professional development for educational professionals. Cal U and IU1 have successfully partnered together in the past on various projects.
The goal of the California University of Pennsylvania/Intermediate Unit 1 English as a Second Language Professional Development Project is to improve classroom instruction for English Language Learners (ELLs) by developing a model curriculum of professional development opportunities for pre-service teachers; new teachers; experienced teachers; principals; assistant principals; and paraprofessionals that offer a range of training programs to meet varying depths of interest and need. At the conclusion of this five-year grant project, over 1,650 educators will have been trained in ESL.
It is imperative that educators at all levels receive professional development opportunities that assist in assessing the ELL’s level of language acquisition, understanding individual’s needs, developing individualized instruction, and providing support through acculturation into a new environment. By providing these professional development opportunities to educators, Cal U and IU1 can assist educators in helping ELL students reach their true potential.
