STEM Design Challenge 2025 – What a Day of Innovation!

Today, student engineers from across our region came together at Floyd C. Fretz Middle School for the Seneca Highlands Intermediate Unit's STEM Design Challenge!

Teams from Smethport, Coudersport, Ridgway, Cameron County, Port Allegany, and Oswayo Valley showed off their creativity, teamwork, challenge success, design, and presentations in a fast-paced K'NEX and/or Engino design competition.

A huge thank you to our amazing judges from local industries:

  • Larry Schuessler (Bradford Area STEM Teacher)
  • Zach Dittman (Civil Engineer, Transystems – Pittsburgh))
  • Eric Parish (Mechanical Engineer, Zippo)
  • Brian Barber (Mechanical Engineer, Zippo)
  • Tony DiFonzo Mechanical Engineer, Case Cutlery)
  • Rob Stiles (Mechanical Engineer, Case Cutlery)

Congratulations to our champions: Smethport Elementary and Smethport Junior and Senior High! These two teams will go on to represent the region at the PA State STEM Design Challenge on May 9, 2025, at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, PA.

We’re so proud of all the students who participated—your bright ideas and teamwork inspire us all.
